Body Mass Index
& Body Surface Area Calculator

Established by the federal government as a standard to determine obesity, the Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in centimeters squared.  Being overweight increases the chances of serious health risks like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

The Body Mass Index is not a foolproof measurement. While muscle tissue weighs more than fat tissue, BMI calculation does not factor the difference between muscle and fat. Therefore, BMI can be a useful first indicator of general fitness for those who lead more sedentary lives, but is less reliable with athletic or muscular individuals.

Body Description:

The Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults released by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in cooperation with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) define "overweight" as a body mass index value between 25 and 29.9, and "obesity" as a body mass index value greater than or equal to 30.

Body Surface Area = 0.20247 x Height(m)0.725 x Weight(kg)0.425

Lean Body Weight (men) = (1.10 x Weight(kg)) - 128 ( Weight2/(100 x Height(m))2)
Lean Body Weight (women) = (1.07 x Weight(kg)) - 148 ( Weight2/(100 x Height(m))2)

Ideal Body Weight (men) = 50 + 2.3 ( Height(in) - 60 )
Ideal Body Weight (women) = 45.5 + 2.3 ( Height(in) - 60 )

Body Mass Index = Weight(kg) / Height(m)2
